Happy Tuesday!

Q4 is in full swing, so we’ve got your Q3 climate tech deals and trends roundup. Our quarterly roundup breaks down where the money went, who exited, and what’s behind all of it.

In deals, $225m for DERs in California; $200m for stellarator fusion in Tennessee; and $110m for superconducting electric transmission in Massachusetts.

In other news, South Korea’s $747bn energy transition plan, a one-year delay for EU methane rules, and a greenlight for one of the largest rare earth deposits outside China.

Check out Grid Forward’s GridPulse podcast for an episode on long-duration storage featuring Currence’s own energy storage analyst, Lukas Karapin-Springorum, here.

Q3 reaches critical mass

There’s a chill in the air, the leaves are changing, and Q4 is in full swing.

You know what that means: our Q3 climate tech roundup! Currence tracks deals, exits, and investment in real time, and here’s our breakdown of last quarter’s biggest hits. Tell us your take by replying to this email.

Biggest rounds

  • Clean firm capacity continues to grab the largest checks. Fission and fusion developers took four of Q3’s 10 largest venture and growth rounds, raising $2.8bn, or 35% of the $8.2bn total. That continues the H1 trend, when nuclear, fusion, and data center companies took seven of the 10 largest rounds. Adding long-duration storage from Form Energy and Antora brings clean firm capacity to just over half of Q3’s total, while AI-linked companies made up most of the rest.
  • 31 mega deals, the highest since Q4 2022, accounted for 82% of disclosed dollars. Deal count fell to its lowest level since 2020 while dollars climbed to their highest level since 2021.
  • The US continues to dominate round size. US rounds hit a record size as Europe kept the lead on count. The median US round reached $23m, the highest of any quarter since 2020. The figure has risen in each of the past four quarters.
  • Carbon removal, hydrogen, and chemicals hit multi-year lows. Carbon removal recorded its fewest venture deals since Q3 2022, although much of its funding is moving directly to offtake. Hydrogen and chemicals and plastics also recorded their lowest levels since quarters in 2020.

Exits

  • Exits held up in Q3, with public listings matching Q2’s pace even as M&A slowed. Fourteen companies went public in Q3, 11 through IPOs and three through SPACs, matching Q2’s total. M&A slowed to 95 deals so far, down from 116 in Q2, though strategic buyers still paid up, led by Autodesk’s $3.6bn acquisition of MaintainX, the quarter’s largest exit. Bankruptcies included vertical farmer 80 Acres Farms and solar EV maker Sono Motors.
  • Energy is carrying the listings market. Twelve of this year's 27 IPOs are energy companies, against three in all of 2025. Six of the eight SPACs are energy too, mostly nuclear and fusion (General Fusion, Newcleo, and ONE Nuclear), and Standard Nuclear raised $150m in its IPO after cutting its size by more than half. Standard Nuclear and ONE Nuclear Energy each went public within a year of being founded.
  • In our 2026 IPO analysis, deals are moving quickly, indicating strong interest and an open window, for now. The median time from announcement to IPO in 2026 is just 28 days. Of the sectors to IPO, energy has been the fastest, with a roughly four-week median and most deals closing within two months. Transportation and Industry have been the slowest. Key takeaways

  • Clean firm capacity dominates. Fission, fusion, even energy storage had a massive quarter, while everything outside those themes logged few deals. But big checks are hiding a thin middle, with deal count at its lowest level since 2020 even as mega deals took 82% of disclosed dollars.
  • The listings window is open for energy, for now. Climate tech has had more IPOs in 2026 than in any full year since 2020, and energy deals are moving from announcement to listing in about four weeks. But public investors are still pushing back on price.
  • AI demand is carrying the sector. Data centers, the nuclear and storage companies selling into them, and the generalist investors leading those rounds all depend on this demand signal. If AI spending slows, there’s no obvious replacement backer.

Reading List

🇰🇷 South Korea unveiled a $747bn energy transition plan, targeting 100GW of low-carbon additions by 2030 under the Korean Green Transformation program. The strategy aims to make Korea a top-three green manufacturing power through hydrogen-reduction steelmaking, next-generation solar cells, and all-solid-state batteries. [Link]

This is industrial strategy paired with climate policy, and the sectors chosen are the ones where Korea thinks it can beat China rather than compete head-on. It comes as Seoul advances construction of as many as eight nuclear reactors in the US, six AP1000s and two of their own APR1400s.

🏛 The EU’s energy chief said methane rules for oil and gas will be delayed by a maximum of one year. [Link]

A one-year delay rather than the permanent stop some countries wanted. These rules matter disproportionately because they apply to imported gas, so they reach well beyond EU borders.

✈️ Infinium launched mSAF, extending its platform to methane feedstocks including RNG. [Link]

RNG becomes another feedstock for Infinium’s existing and announced Fischer-Tropsch projects, firming up the supply chain rather than adding new capacity. Feedstock flexibility is how eSAF projects are de-risking against any single input market. Currence clients can read the Q3 2026 Fuels & Carbon Outlook to learn more.

🌬 Global floating wind capacity reached 382MW, per RenewableUK. [Link]

Small in absolute terms, but floating unlocks deep-water geographies that fixed-bottom can’t reach, including the US west coast. California is running a procurement of up to 7.6GW that would have to be mostly floating wind. [CPUC]

⛏ Greenland approved mining plans for Critical Metals’ Tanbreez project, one of the largest undeveloped heavy rare earth deposits outside China, with $2.1bn estimated total value and $290m of initial capex. [Link]

🛢 Brent crude is jumping again, nearly 5% to more than $106, with upward pressure from Trump weighing escalation in Iran, continued attacks on Middle East shipping, and Hurricane Isaias shutting US Gulf production. [Link]

🔋 Antora announced its Pratt project, a repeat of its 5GWh thermal storage design with equity finance from CIP and UPP. [Link]

💧 France set out penalties for fuel suppliers failing to meet clean hydrogen mandates, following Germany’s move in August. [Link]

🛰 The FCC is shortening satellite approval timelines as part of a broader deregulation push, and moving environmental scrutiny of launch, debris removal, and reentry onto the FAA. It approved 15,000 new Starlink satellites for direct-to-mobile connectivity this week. [Link, Link]

🌡 The Climate Brink on the impacts of this year’s record El Niño. [Link]

🚗 Suzuki built its first electric kei car on BYD batteries and undercut BYD’s cheapest mini EV at about $13,500, a way to win a price war against your own supplier. [Link]
